Build a structured export market research process using free and paid data sources to validate demand, size the opportunity and benchmark competitors before committing to a new market.
Taiwan brands that enter new markets without structured research frequently discover — after committing inventory, fulfillment infrastructure and marketing budget — that the market is smaller than expected, dominated by entrenched competitors, or subject to regulatory requirements that make their product non-compliant. Structured research before commitment costs weeks of desk work and tool subscriptions; premature market entry costs multiples more.
The goal of pre-entry market research is to answer three questions: Is there sufficient demand? Who are the competitors and how are they winning? Is this market accessible at a sustainable economics? A research process that can't answer these three questions affirmatively is not ready to proceed to entry.
For US and Australian markets where Amazon is significant, Jungle Scout's Product Database and Opportunity Finder provide monthly search volume and estimated sales for any product category. Search for your product keyword, filter by category and review: average monthly revenue for the top 10 sellers, average review count (indicates competitive maturity), average selling price and estimated units sold.
For Japan (Rakuten), use Rakuten Ichiba's public ranking data and Aucfan's market research tools. Google Keyword Planner provides search volume for keywords in each target country — validate that buyers in your target market search for your product category in meaningful volume.
Use a bottom-up sizing approach: (estimated searches per month in category) x (estimated conversion rate) x (average order value) = estimated monthly market revenue. Cross-validate with top-down approaches: industry association reports, Euromonitor or Statista market reports, and customs import data (UN Comtrade for import volumes by HS code and country of origin).
UN Comtrade is free and shows how much of your product category the US, Australia or Japan imported from all source countries, including Taiwan, in the last 5 years. If Taiwan's share is growing, there is established trade infrastructure. If Taiwan is not a current major supplier, you face an adoption barrier as well as market entry.
Identify the top 5-10 competitors in your target market. For each, document: (1) Brand positioning (price tier, quality claim, target segment). (2) Pricing — regular price and promotional pricing patterns. (3) Channels — where they sell (Amazon only, multi-channel, retail). (4) Product differentiation — what features, specifications or design make them win? (5) Customer reviews — what do buyers love and complain about? (6) Marketing approach — Amazon ads, social media, influencer activity.
Amazon review mining is the most valuable free research tool. Read the 1-2 star reviews on competitors' best-selling products — they directly tell you what customer pain points the market is under-serving. Build your product positioning to address those unmet needs.
Map the price range in your category from value to premium. Calculate your total landed cost at each target market: Taiwan product cost + freight + customs duty + FBA or 3PL fees + Amazon selling fee (if applicable). Compare your potential selling price at your target margin against the current market price distribution. Are you competitive in a viable price tier?
If your economics only work at a price point above current market rates, identify the differentiation story that justifies the premium. If you cannot articulate a clear reason why buyers would choose your product at a 20%+ price premium over established competitors, reconsider entry economics before proceeding.
Every target market has regulatory requirements. Before finalising market selection, conduct a regulatory pre-check: list your product's material composition, intended use and target demographic. For each target market, identify: applicable mandatory standards and certifications, labelling requirements, restricted or prohibited ingredients/materials, import permit requirements.
A 2-hour regulatory pre-check (using government agency websites for each market) can identify blocking issues — standards your product currently cannot meet — before you commit resources. Better to discover a blocking requirement early than post-entry.
A structured pre-entry research process for one market should take 2-4 weeks for a thorough analysis. Allocate: 3-5 days for demand validation, 3-5 days for competitor analysis, 2-3 days for pricing and margin modelling, 1-2 days for regulatory pre-check. Rushing this phase creates expensive mistakes.
UN Comtrade for import/export volume data, Google Keyword Planner for search demand, Amazon's public listing data for competitive analysis, and government trade statistics agencies (US ITC DataWeb, Australian Border Force trade data, Japan Customs). These free sources cover most pre-entry research needs.
For complex B2B market entry or large capital commitments, a local market research firm provides primary research (buyer interviews, focus groups, retailer assessments) that desk research cannot. For DTC e-commerce entry, desk research and small-scale test campaigns (Amazon PPC with a small inventory) provide faster and cheaper market feedback.
