Launch your first Amazon PPC campaign with the right campaign structure, bid strategy, keyword match types and ACoS target for products launching from Taiwan into the US market.
New Amazon listings have no organic rank history, no reviews and no conversion data — Amazon's A9 algorithm won't show them in organic search without signals. Sponsored Products ads bypass this cold-start problem by placing your listing at the top of search results on a cost-per-click basis, generating sales velocity and conversion data that feeds organic ranking.
For Taiwan brands launching a new product, the first 30-60 days of PPC spend is the price of organic rank acceleration. Budget for ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) above your break-even ACoS during launch — treat it as a listing investment, not a profit-generating channel, until organic rank is established.
Recommended launch structure: (1) Auto campaign — let Amazon target keywords and ASINs automatically. (2) Broad match manual campaign — target researched keywords with broad match for discovery. (3) Exact match manual campaign — target high-converting keywords from the auto and broad campaigns with tight exact match bids for efficiency.
Use separate campaigns (not ad groups) for each match type — this allows independent budget control and cleaner data. Name campaigns consistently: Brand-Product-AutoLaunch, Brand-Product-BroadLaunch, Brand-Product-ExactScale.
Broad match: your ad shows for searches containing your keyword in any order, plus synonyms and related terms. Wide reach, lower conversion, useful for discovery. Phrase match: your ad shows for searches containing your keyword phrase in order. Moderate reach and conversion. Exact match: your ad shows only for searches that exactly match your keyword. Lowest reach, highest conversion, lowest wasted spend.
Negative keywords are equally important. Add irrelevant search terms as negative exact or negative phrase matches to prevent wasted spend. In the first 2 weeks of an auto campaign, review the Search Term report daily and add non-converting terms as negatives.
ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sales) = Ad Spend / Ad Revenue x 100%. Break-even ACoS = (1 - COGS / Selling Price) x 100%. If your product sells for USD 30 and costs USD 12 landed (including FBA fees), your gross margin is 60% and your break-even ACoS is 60%. Campaigns below break-even ACoS are profitable; above break-even they lose money per advertising sale but may build rank.
Target ACoS for a launched product with organic rank: 20-35% of break-even ACoS (i.e., if break-even is 60%, target 15-25% ACoS). During launch phase, accept 80-100%+ ACoS for 4-6 weeks while velocity builds.
Review campaigns weekly. The optimisation loop: (1) Identify keywords with high ACoS (> 2x target) — reduce bids by 15-25%. (2) Identify keywords with low ACoS and good impressions — increase bids by 10-20%. (3) Identify keywords with clicks but no sales in 2+ weeks — pause or reduce bids significantly. (4) Harvest high-performing search terms from auto/broad campaigns and add as exact match in the exact campaign with a strong bid.
Use Amazon's dynamic bidding options: "Down only" (reduces bids when less likely to convert) is safer for launch; "Up and down" (Amazon adjusts bids dynamically) works well once you have conversion data. Set portfolio budgets to cap total daily spend across campaigns.
Once Brand Registry is active, unlock Sponsored Brands (formerly Headline Search Ads) — banner ads at the top of search results featuring your brand logo, a custom headline and 3 products. Sponsored Brands drive branded awareness and Store traffic. Sponsored Display allows retargeting of product page viewers and competitor ASIN targeting.
Launch order: Sponsored Products first (90 days), then Sponsored Brands to build brand presence, then Sponsored Display for retargeting. Each layer adds coverage and compounds the traffic.
A minimum of USD 20/day per campaign is needed to gather data meaningfully. For a 3-campaign launch structure, budget USD 60-100/day total for the first 30 days. Adjust based on conversion data.
Both. Auto campaigns discover keywords you haven't thought of. Manual campaigns give you control over bids for proven keywords. Run both in parallel and feed discoveries from auto into manual.
Not necessarily during launch. Calculate whether the organic rank and review velocity generated by the campaign have long-term value. If after 45 days organic sales are not increasing and ACoS remains very high, the product may have a fundamental listing or price competitiveness problem to fix first.
