Identify why FBA inventory becomes stranded, how to fix each stranding reason quickly and how to prevent recurring stranded inventory that accumulates long-term storage fees.
Stranded inventory is FBA inventory that is physically at an Amazon fulfillment centre but is not associated with an active offer (listing) and therefore cannot be sold. Amazon charges storage fees on stranded inventory even though it is not generating revenue. Stranded inventory also occupies fulfillment centre space that counts toward your IPI (Inventory Performance Index) score.
Stranded inventory is shown in Seller Central under Inventory > Fix Stranded Inventory. The dashboard shows the reason for stranding, the ASIN, quantity and the recommended action. Amazon has automated rules that create removal orders for long-stranded inventory — monitoring this dashboard weekly prevents automatic removal of stock you want to keep.
"Listing closed": the offer was closed or the ASIN was deleted. Fix: relist the product or merge the ASIN with the correct parent. "Suppressed listing": the listing violates a content policy (prohibited image, missing mandatory attribute). Fix: edit the listing to address the suppression reason shown in the Quality Dashboard.
"Price too high/too low": Amazon's price validation blocked the offer. Fix: update the list price to a reasonable range and ensure the "your price" field is correctly set. "Blocked ASIN": the product category was restricted or an IP complaint was filed. Fix: resolve the underlying restriction or brand infringement complaint.
A suppressed listing means the product page exists but Amazon will not show it in search results — usually due to a content violation. The inventory associated with a suppressed listing becomes stranded because there is no active offer to fulfill.
Check the Listing Quality Dashboard for suppression reasons. Common issues: main image on white background missing, product title contains promotional phrases ("best price," "free"), prohibited claims (medical claims on non-drug products), missing mandatory attributes for the category (e.g. age group for toys, material type for apparel).
Step 1: Go to Fix Stranded Inventory in Seller Central. Step 2: For each stranded ASIN, click the reason code link to see the specific issue. Step 3: Edit the listing to correct the issue. Step 4: Re-activate the offer. Step 5: Confirm inventory moves from Stranded to Available within 24 hours.
For bulk stranding events (e.g. category-wide suppression due to a policy change), Amazon sometimes provides a batch fix tool in the Inventory dashboard. Check the Performance Notifications in Seller Central for announcements about upcoming policy enforcement that will affect your listings.
Set up automated alerts: in Seller Central Notifications, enable alerts for listing suppression, pricing errors and inventory status changes. Check the Fix Stranded Inventory dashboard weekly as part of your account health routine.
When closing a product (discontinuing a SKU), remove all inventory via a Removal Order before closing the listing — do not close the listing first. Also ensure listings are complete and fully compliant before sending inventory to FBA. A listing checked for suppression pre-shipment avoids the scenario of inventory arriving at FBA with no valid offer to attach to.
Amazon charges long-term storage fees (LTSF) on inventory that has been in FBA for more than 365 days. Stranded inventory that sits unfixed for months accumulates LTSF on top of standard storage fees. A $10 unit stored for 18 months in the stranded state can cost $5-8 in total storage fees — 50-80% of product cost.
Set a 30-day rule: any inventory stranded for 30 days without a fix path should be removed. The cost of removal ($0.97 per standard-size unit) is much lower than months of accumulated fees and the opportunity cost of idle capital.
Yes. If you have auto-removal rules enabled for stranded inventory, Amazon will create removal orders after a defined period. Check your automated removal settings in Seller Central to control this behaviour.
Yes. Stranded inventory percentage is a component of the Inventory Performance Index (IPI). High stranded inventory rates lower IPI, which can restrict your FBA storage capacity limits.
Stranded inventory has no active listing attached. Unfulfillable inventory is damaged or defective and cannot be shipped to customers. Both appear in inventory reports but require different fixes — stranded inventory needs a listing fix; unfulfillable inventory needs inspection and either refurbishment or removal.
