Selling on Amazon Australia (amazon.com.au) involves GST obligations that differ from US sales tax. Here is what Taiwan FBA sellers need to know about Australia's GST system, Amazon's collection responsibilities, and your remaining obligations.
Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 10% tax on most goods and services sold in Australia. Unlike the US, which has no federal sales tax and relies on state-level taxes, Australia has a single uniform GST rate administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
For Amazon Australia sellers, the critical rule is the Low Value Imported Goods (LVIG) measure, effective since July 2018: overseas sellers who make more than AUD $75,000 in annual Australian sales must register for GST and collect 10% GST on all goods valued at AUD $1,000 or less sold to Australian consumers.
The AUD $75,000 threshold applies to your total Australian sales across all channels (Amazon, your own website, other platforms) combined — not just Amazon.
Amazon's marketplace facilitator role: Amazon Australia collects and remits GST on behalf of all third-party sellers for sales made through amazon.com.au — regardless of whether the individual seller has registered for GST. This mirrors the US marketplace facilitator approach.
Practical result: for most Taiwan sellers using Amazon Australia FBA or selling through amazon.com.au, Amazon handles the GST collection complexity automatically. You do not need to register for or remit GST on Amazon marketplace sales.
Despite Amazon's marketplace facilitation, Taiwan sellers may have Australian GST obligations in specific situations:
Direct-to-consumer sales from your own Australian website or Shopify store: marketplace facilitator rules only cover Amazon. Your own website sales to Australian consumers are your direct GST responsibility if you exceed AUD $75,000 annually.
B2B sales to Australian businesses: sales to registered Australian businesses (who provide their ABN — Australian Business Number) may be GST-free if the buyer is purchasing for business purposes and you are both registered. B2B sales outside Amazon require careful documentation.
Physical presence or inventory in Australia: storing FBA inventory in Australia's Amazon warehouses technically creates a GST nexus. However, since Amazon handles the GST collection on those sales, there is no additional GST compliance burden created by having Australian FBA inventory.
GST registration when exceeding $75,000: if your total Australian channel sales (including direct channels) exceed AUD $75,000 in a 12-month period, you must register for GST with the ATO (ato.gov.au). Registration is free. After registering, you file Business Activity Statements (BAS) quarterly reporting your GST collected and paid.
When you ship bulk inventory from Taiwan to Amazon Australia's fulfillment centers, you are importing commercial goods into Australia. All imported goods over AUD $1,000 are subject to import duties and GST at the border.
Import GST: 10% GST applies to the customs value (CIF — cost, insurance, freight) of your shipment. For a shipment with a CIF value of AUD $5,000, you pay AUD $500 in import GST. This GST is paid at the time of customs clearance.
Import duty: varies by product category and HTS code. Many consumer goods from Taiwan attract 0–5% import duty. Check the Australian Border Force tariff schedule (abf.gov.au) for your specific product. Australia has a Free Trade Agreement with ASEAN nations, but Taiwan is not a signatory — Taiwanese goods enter at standard MFN rates.
GST credits for registered businesses: if you are registered for GST, the GST you pay on your imported FBA inventory is claimable as an input tax credit on your BAS, offsetting your GST output obligation. This prevents double-taxation on the same goods.
Customs broker: use an Australian customs broker for your FBA inventory shipments to handle import entry, duty and GST payment, and Amazon warehouse delivery. Major brokers with Amazon FBA expertise operating in Australia include Customs Connect, GFS Customs, and Crown Customs.
Australia has its own product safety and labeling standards that differ from the US. Key requirements for Taiwan brands entering the Australian market:
ACL (Australian Consumer Law): applies to all consumer products. Products must not be unsafe, must match their description, and must be fit for purpose. Misleading claims on packaging or in listings violate ACL and can result in fines from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Product safety standards: Australia has mandatory safety standards for specific product categories managed by the ACCC. Relevant categories for Taiwan exporters: children's toys (AS/NZS ISO 8124 — similar to but not identical to ASTM F963), electrical goods (must be SAA/RCM marked), personal protective equipment, and portable pools and inflatables.
Electrical compliance (RCM mark): any electrical or electronic product sold in Australia must carry the RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) — a combined mark covering electrical safety (IEC 60335 standards) and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility). This is separate from US UL and FCC. SAA (Standards Australia) accredited labs in Taiwan can perform RCM testing.
Mandatory text in English: Australia requires that all mandatory product information (safety warnings, instructions, ingredient lists for food/cosmetics) be in English. Translation requirements are less complex than Japan, but all consumer-facing information must be legible and in English.
Amazon Australia FBA operates through fulfillment centers in Melbourne (Dandenong South) and Sydney (Moorebank). Sending inventory: your FBA shipment plan in Seller Central (AU marketplace) will direct you to one or both of these facilities.
Freight from Taiwan to Australia: transit time is 10–18 days by sea (LCL). Cost is typically AUD $150–$280 per CBM door-to-warehouse. Air freight: 3–5 days, AUD $8–$18 per kg.
Australian FBA fees: slightly higher than US FBA fees in percentage terms due to smaller market scale. Fulfillment fees for a standard-size item (under 500g): AUD $5.50–$8.00. Storage fees: AUD $22–$24 per CBM per month (standard size). Referral fees: 8–15% of sale price by category.
Listing requirements: Amazon Australia listings are in English. ASIN structures are separate from amazon.com — create AU-specific listings or use BIL to sync from US. Include Australian-relevant content: measurements in metric (cm, kg, litres), pricing in AUD, and compliance marks relevant to Australia (RCM for electrical goods).
Market opportunity: Amazon Australia is growing rapidly but still far less saturated than Amazon US. Many categories have fewer than 20 serious sellers on page 1. A well-listed product with 30+ reviews can reach page 1 in most non-electronics categories within 3–6 months — a timeline that would be unrealistic on Amazon US.
Not strictly required for Amazon marketplace sales — Amazon operates as the marketplace facilitator and handles GST collection regardless. However, if your Australian sales exceed AUD $75,000 across all channels, you must register for GST, which requires an ABN. Apply for an ABN free at abr.gov.au as a foreign entity.
Generally no. Australia has its own mandatory standards. US FCC certification does not satisfy Australian RCM requirements for electrical products. CPSC compliance does not automatically satisfy ACCC standards. Some international IEC standards overlap, which can reduce testing scope, but separate Australian compliance testing and marking is required for most regulated product categories.
Digital products and services sold to Australian consumers are subject to 10% GST under Australia's Digital Economy rules. If you sell digital products (software, e-books, subscriptions) through your own website to Australian customers, you must register and remit GST on those digital sales once you exceed AUD $75,000 in Australian digital sales.
Amazon Australia enforces the same product compliance standards as Amazon US for regulated categories. Competitors who have been selling non-compliant products on Amazon Australia face the same compliance documentation requests that you will encounter. The advantage for compliant Taiwan brands: you can invest in compliance once and operate confidently, while non-compliant competitors face ongoing listing suppression risk.
